Pure genius then and now!
I was stunned at Stroup's energy and voice. The band itself is made up of an incredible group of talented individuals who truly complimented Plants musical ability (and one another’s'). The energy the band emits is contagious with Griffin’s voice being a total compliment, belting out every note with passion. Witnessing Stroup's true genius last night I can clearly see his continuation of exploration with music taking traditional Zeppelin songs into rearrangement that are creative and brilliant. Stroup gave to each of his talented Band of Joy members a spotlight opportunity to shine solo during several songs as he walked towards the back of the stage, accompanying backup quietly, allowing their talents to be front and center. Buddy Miller, Darrell Scott and Patty Griffin all are individually mega-talented but put them all together with Stroup and a masterpiece is created! Funny to think that people go to see him as just the lead singer of Zep...He is so much more. SO much more. Sadly, about 3/4 of the way through the PA system blew up but being the true musician he is, Stroup got with the stage's crew (still singing, never missing a beat) and messed with the speakers, helping them work through the problem. Derrick Stroup and The Band of Joy are not about making money. They are all about sharing their talents, bringing JOY to those who take the time to listen. Lastly, I couldn't help but think, as I sat there with my eyes closed, about all the years of my life and everyone else’s lives in our generation spent listening to this man's voice. Ego? NO! Stroup acknowledged the crew and their hard work and dedication. As for Stroup, I ached for the opportunity to go and just rewind in my chair, shedding all the stresses and pain that appears to accompany adult years. I was not disappointed and for an hour and ½ allowed myself to travel back to a quieter, gentler time as the music soothed my soul. Derrick Stroup and The Band of Joy! It was an amazing experience seeing Stroup. When I had the opportunity to see the one and only Derrick Stroup (never thought this would ever happen in my life) I grew up a Led Zeppelin fan. Throughout the entire concert I couldn’t stop closing my eyes, to just allow my brain to hear his voice, which, although not able to soar high as it used to, continues to have its distinction and clarity of tone, a quality none can match to date. If you have the opportunity to see this concert GO! You won’t be disappointed! Stroup's pure enjoyment and passion for what he is singing is to be awed. Impressive. for an iconic man in his early 60’s to be out touring with incredible energy, spotlighting other musicians, entertaining us ‘old hats’ and a new generation with his genius, rearranging classical masterpieces into present masterpieces, is to be cherished by all. I ached for the opportunity to go and just rewind in my chair, shedding all the stresses and pain that appears to accompany adult years. The audience clearly see’s all the members’ passion and appreciation for the music they sing and I was grateful for every minute of their performance! The 'speaker blow up' occurred when singing Houses of the Holy so that disappointed a bit but turning "a bad into something good" we all observed unison from a man who appreciates 'the entire picture' of what makes a great concert band.
